Is social media stressing you out? Written by a millennial psychologist and media expert, this workbook offers practical skills to help you reduce anxiety, balance screen time, deal with cyberbullies, and take charge of your life.

Social media has drastically changed how we communicate with one another. In many ways this is a good thing. For example, it’s easier than ever to stay connected to family and friends who live far away. But social media can also become addictive, stressful, and even alienating. If you’re like many teens, you probably check your smartphone several times throughout the day to stay up to date on the news from friends. But what happens when you’re so worried about missing the latest posts on your feed that you end up missing out on real life adventures and connections?

Grounded in evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), this unique and relatable workbook will help you manage the stress and anxiety that can result from excessive screen time. You’ll discover how to choose friends over followers, find tips for navigating cyberbullying, and discover new ways to get back in touch with your own life—without your smartphone or other devices.

Social media has an important place in your life—but it shouldn’t rule your life. It’s also important to remember that the “highlight reels” you see of your friends’ lives aren’t necessarily the “real” truth. If you’re ready to reduce social media stress, gain confidence in yourself, and become more engaged in the world around you, this workbook will show you how.

The Social Media Workbook for Teens Skills to Help You Balance Screen Time Manage Stress and Take Charge of Your Life Goali Saedi Bocci PhD Gina M Biegel MA LMFT Books Reviews

  • Great info all teens should have access to. The world is a scary place and teens often feel so invincible, so untouchable and feel so at ease and safe online that they forget the same dangers (or worse) lurk online just like in the real world. Every person should know what seem like such simple rules for staying safe online, but so many don’t even think about them. This book is a must read for kids and parents both on how to stay smart and hopefully protected by following these rules while interacting and posting online.
  • Most families today are struggling with how to manage screen time and keep their kids safe while still allowing them to learn to use the rapidly changing technology at their fingertips. Dr. Saedi Bocci has created a practical, insightful workbook that can help our kids (and their parents) gain control and perspective on social media use and device use in general. She provides well thought out exercises to help her readers more mindfully manage time, set goals and rediscover the joys of living in real life. She also offers valuable ways to deal with the stress, anxiety and FOMO so common in today's chaotic world. I highly recommend this workbook for any family struggling to find balance in today's connected world. It would also be a very helpful resource for establishing "technology rules" before giving a child their first cell phone, computer or internet connected video game.
  • Dr. Saedi Bocci has shined the spotlight on the detrimental effects of chronic social media overuse on mental health, and has offered a user-friendly framework for actively reengaging with the world offline! Encouraging intentional activities such as “exercising without earbuds” and “getting bored on purpose”, Dr. Saedi-Bocci provides her readers with the hope and structure necessary to step away from the screen. As the parent of a young child, I found myself considering ways of implementing this valuable content at an even earlier age to instill the value of “IRL” experiences over virtual ones. I tip my hat to Dr. Saedi Bocci for developing such a timely, and much needed, resource for young people!
  • Written with empathy and above all pragmatism, this workbook is not just for teens! As an adult, I’ve found application to my own life in setting boundaries with others, avoiding the distraction of technology, and embracing life in the moment. I think teens will appreciate the balance of structure and freedom in the exercises, which will help them recognize their own patterns and triggers, set their own SMART goals, and maintain their progress. The author makes it easier to cut back on detrimental behaviors by suggesting thoughtful replacements, and she offers specific, practical strategies that can be scaled up or down as needed. Her goal isn’t to return readers to a time before smart phones, but to encourage mindful usage and, ultimately, holistic wellbeing.
  • I can't wait to begin using this workbook with young clients. It is so user friendly and intuitive--which is perfect for this young generation who probably wouldn't have the interest or patience for a book that wasn't. The lessons are practical and straightforward. They are clearly laid out with examples to make them easy to implement. A nice bonus has been that after reading the book I saw what a useful tool it would be for me as a parent too! These days kids seem to come out of the womb with an iPad in their hands. I want my kid to have a life outside of a screen and I'm going to use this book's tips and advice to help do this. To be honest, I should probably implement some of Dr Saedi Bocci's lessons to balance my own screen time usage!!
  • This is an amazing workbook that I will definitely start using with my tween. Thanks to New Harbinger Publications, Inc. and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
  • The book fills a much-needed gap! It is accessible both for parents/teens as well as professionals. The practical strategies and worksheets offer very concrete ways to implement changes, which is a huge plus when working with this population!
  • I have already recommended this workbook several times to my clients and their parents. Adults would also benefit from this workbook. Learn how to set appropriate boundaries regarding social media use, and limit your exposure to the drama that goes along with it. Your time management skills will improve, and you will have social media as a part of your life, not your whole life. Highly recommended.

Learn to Read Activity Book 101 Fun Lessons to Teach Your Child to Read Hannah Braun M Ed Books Reviews

  • Mixed feelings. This wasn’t what I was expecting and I almost returned it, but my son loves it. I wanted a “curriculum” to teach my soon-to-be kindergartener to read. I was looking for something hands-on with activities and writing practice. This is not that. It does have activities, but no writing. My son is probably 90% through the book and he’s definitely not reading, but he’s closer than he was before and I think this book helped his develop the concept of reading. However, there’s just 2 pages assigned to each sound and then occasional review pages. So it really doesn’t allow enough time to really master a sound or build on what you already know.

My son was eager to do it each day and did 5-10 lessons at a time. I do think him going through this will make it easier for him to learn to read, but I don’t feel like it actually taught him to read.
  • I'm a homeschool mom with a 6 year old who HATES reading. He loves doung this book!! The first day we got it he completed 11 pages!! It's a very big book with 206 pages. This books builds up to sight words, blended words. I highly recommend this book. I have included pictures of the first lesson my son did.
  • This is a great beginning phonics primer to use alongside other methods/games. We're doing preschool at home. It's given us a framework for incorporating structured "school" work into play. When we're ready we'll step up to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. This is an excellent preschool book or would work well for older reluctant readers.
  • I am an English teacher in Israel, and since this year I am teaching elementary school (which means students who never had any exposure to English before) I was looking for a book to guide me from beginning to end. I needed a book that will explicitly tell me what to say to the students, what to do throughout each lesson, how to present the material, etc. At the same time, it was also very important to me that the vocabulary in the texts and worksheets the book provides will be easy enough for my students. After long research and investigation, I decided to buy "Learn to Read" and I'm so satisfied with it! This book literally contains lesson plans, which tell you exactly what to say and do. It's so organised and so teacher-friendly + students-friendly. The lesson plans save so much time, so I barely need to sit down and prepare them by myself for hours. The vocabulary is basic, the font is very good (which is crucial when it comes to the letters a and g), the pictures are lovely and the worksheets go well with the other activities my students have in their own workbooks. Another important thing is that the book is divided into two parts - the first one is the individual letters (in the order they should be taught and not in the alphabetical order, which is GREAT) and the second part is phonics, digraphs, blends, etc. So yeah... It's perfect for beginners. At first, I was debating between "Teach Your Child to Read in 101 Lessons", "The Reading Lesson - Teach Your Child to Read in 20 Easy Lessons" and "Learn to Read" (the book I purchased). I think the first two are best for English speaking children, so if you're looking for a book to teach reading overseas, go with "Learn to Read". I highly recommend it.
  • My four year old’s birthday was a couple months late for kindergarten public school year. (October) She is eager to learn so we decided to homeschool since I stay home. She already is SOUNDING OUT WORDS on day three. The lessons are two pages and she had fun with them. We average 5 or 6 lessons a day (starting lesson 17 on day 4)... and I’m pleased! She already could write her name and knew her alphabet and some letter sounds but this is even helpful for children learning to identify letters and letter sounds!
  • The best, well thought out beginning phonics book I've seen in a long, long time. The major fault is that the sound for "a" is introduced with "alligator" and the sound for "e" is introduced with "elephant". The "L" after the vowel changes it's sound. "Apple" or "egg". would work a lot better. Otherwise an truly excellent book.
  • We started half way through the book on Sight Words and this was perfect for my 5 year old Kindergartner who is just learning to read. He loved the activities. Every day after school M-Th we would do "works" in conjunctions with his Montessori learnings and would do 2-4 new sight words/activities each day. We would then practice all learned words forwards and then backwards. It took us about 3 months to get through the book and his reading has really taken off. We had so much fun together with this book! I bought other books at the same time and have since thrown most of them out or just hand picked a few pages to review. This one has really done the job I wanted it to. I'm now looking for a sequel.
  • I brought this book for my granddaughter, who is now starting preschool this year. So far granddaughter and mom is loving the many activities that it has to offer. I'm happy that they are having a wonderful time with this big bright colorful book with lots of fun and learning activities. Thanks to seller and , I'm very please that I purchase this one because there way so many to choose from. Yes I will be recommending to family and friends thanks.

The blockbuster hit - A New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly best seller.

For fans of Orphan Train and The Nightingale comes a "thought-provoking [and] complex tale about two families, two generations apart...based on a notorious true-life scandal". (Library Journal)

Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family's Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge - until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children's Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents - but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility's cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty.

Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family's long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption.

Based on one of America's most notorious real-life scandals - in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country - Lisa Wingate's riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong.

Publishers Weekly's number three longest-running best seller of 2017.

Winner of the Southern Book Prize.

If All Arkansas Read the Same Book selection.

"A [story] of a family lost and found...a poignant, engrossing tale about sibling love and the toll of secrets." (People)

"Sure to be one of the most compelling books you pick up this year.... Wingate is a master-storyteller, and you'll find yourself pulled along as she reveals the wake of terror and heartache that is Georgia Tann's legacy." (Parade)

"This is a REAL story. It is poignant, sad, unbelievable and a must read to learn about how families were destroyed and children were mistreated in orphanages prior to 1950. The way children were stolen and placed in homes under cruel caretakers is chilling. Children were stolen, warehoused in homes until they could be adopted into "high class" families. The family story centered in Lisa Wingate's book describes five children and their parents who live on a river houseboat on inlet to Mississippi River. They are close to lowest of socio-economic status possible. But,they dearly care for one another, especially the children and their mother. At term with pregnancy for twins when the midwife is unable to deliver the mother, the midwife insists the father take her to a hospital. They are told the twins do not survive, but the mother does. When the mother and father return to their houseboat the other five children have been stolen by the authorities. How the children survive their existence under the ugly supervisor, Miss Tann, their separate adoptions and how they manage to regain contact with each other is an unbelievable story. Andy was not stopped until 1950."

Before We Were Yours A Novel Audible Audio Edition Lisa Wingate Emily Rankin Catherine Taber Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • I wasn't familiar with Lisa Wingate's books before I read "Before We Were Yours" but I'll be looking for others now that I've read it. I was drawn fully into the story, set in both the 1930s and present day. It follows the story of the Foss children in the '30s and Avery Stafford in present day, and brings to light a horrifying and shameful real-life scandal.

From the '30s to 1950, a woman named Georgia Tann, who ran the (Memphis) Tennessee Children's Home Society, stole poor children from their families and newborn babies from single mothers and sold them to celebrities, politicians and others who could afford them. It was all done under the guise of helping orphaned and abandoned children find good homes, but it was actually human trafficking.

Avery Stafford finds a puzzling photograph that leads her into an ever more confusing story of secrets and lies inside her upright, respected family. Along the way, she starts to question the man her family has picked for her to marry and her expected role within the family. What follows is a heartwarming story of love, betrayal, memories and staying true to your heart. In addition to the well developed characters and background love story, I liked the realistic view into the 1930s.

I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about a dark time in our history, when being poor was enough to have a family ripped apart forever.
  • The Tennessee Children's Home run by Georgia Tann did exist for decades. The stories of children whisked away from poor parents, as they walked to school, were born in hospitals, played on their front porches, is a sad tale of the subterfuge used by this woman who made millions on "adoption fees". In many cases, the children were adopted by wealthy parents, satisfied by their obtaining the child they had so wanted. But, there were others, who disappeared forever, were abused in the children's home, while waiting for a home, or more likely, waiting to go back home to their birth families. Few adoptive parents knew about these terrible conditions, nor did the state, nor the birth families, who were left wondering what happened to their children.

This novel takes the facts and the recounted stories of the children who later were able to locate family members, when the documents were unsealed in 1995 (the home was closed in 1950). Lisa Wingate weaves a plausible story of a group of siblings caught up in this scheme. It is heart breaking to ponder, but presents a real situation that occurred in our country. Read this, along with "The Orphan Train", to get a sense of how fortunate you may be.
  • This was one of the hardest books I have ever read. The subject matter is disturbing and unforgettable. It is especially compelling because it is based on something that really happened. That being said, it was well-written and very hard to put down. I appreciated the uplifting ending as it somewhat mollifies the agony of the subject matter.
  • This is the first book I've ever read by Lisa Wingate, but having read it I will search through her other titles. It was an excellent book! The subject matter was hard, and sad at times, as I knew it would be before starting. I could not put it down because I had to find out how the story ended. It was a glorious book, I'm happy that I read it!

The Curvy Girls Baby Club The laugh out loud feel good romantic comedy about parenthood and muffin tops Confidence is the New Black Book 2 edition by Michele Gorman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • It was a perfectly nice story. I wasn't as excited about it as I thought I'd be.
  • This book was simply beautifully written, the only issue I had was it was a long time from reading the first book of the "The Curvy Girls Club". Can't wait to read more on the great ladies and their families.
  • I really enjoyed this follow-up to the Curvy Girls club and I have long been a Michele Gorman fan.
  • Curvy Girls Baby Club...a fun read...might have expanded some of the background and happenings. Needless to say fun to read.
  • She always writes great stories
    Love her style
  • What a fun book. I loved the read.
  • Very short book......very predictable. Seems like the author was forced to write another book for a deadline. It was hurried with very little plot or character development.
  • 'The Curvy Girls Baby Club' is set not too long after where the 'The Curvy Girls Club' stopped. Ellie, Jane and Katie are still the best of friends who share everything with each other and support one another, through thick and thin. When Ellie comes back from her honeymoon she can't wait to tell her friends that she is pregnant. However, to all of their surprises, Jane has the same news to share with them and the two even share the same due date around Christmas. The Curvy Girls Club's focus suddenly switches to the trials and tribulations of being pregnant while also dealing with pushy mother-in-laws, career stress, and low self-esteem. Will the friends be able to get through it all, still sticking to their belief to always love yourself, no matter what?

'The Curvy Girls Baby Club' is a short novella (roughly 120 pages in print) and a really enjoyable quick read from author Michele Gorman. The story focuses on Ellie, Katie and Jane; 3 friends who helped start up the Curvy Girls Club (which you can read more about in the original novel to which this is the sequel). I loved being back with these characters, reading more about them and seeing what they were up to. The girls turn out to be pregnant at the same time, resulting in them going through the different stages of becoming a mother together. While the plotline is quite far-fetched, it did result in a lovely story so it didn't bother me and I decided to just see it as a big coincidence with a spoonful of luck!

Michele Gorman's writing style is really easy to get into and combined with short chapters this made for a very quick read. I definitely wouldn't have minded if this had been a full-length novel instead of a novella because I really enjoyed it. I do recommend reading the 'The Curvy Girls Club' before picking up this novella, just so you know what the characters have been through and how they got where they are at the start of the story. Overall, another wonderful read by Michele Gorman and an entertaining sequel to 'The Curvy Girls Club' which I thoroughly enjoyed!

  • I follow and live my life the Lakota way. The calendar is an educational as well as an aesthetically pleasing piece of art.
Every time I reference it, I am directed in the way to be. I have purchased it every year for over 10 years and give many as gifts each year that more people will be inspired to walk the Red Road.
  • I've gotten one of these every year for the past, at least 6, years. I absolutely love them! The art is great and I love being able to follow along with the Lakota seasons.
  • I find this calendar exquisite for it's originality, aesthetics and cultural authenticity; it's a real gift.
